Should I apply sunscreen to my pet?
Absolutely! Just like humans, pets can get sunburned. Areas with little or thin fur, such as the belly, the inner parts and tips of the ears, and the nose - are especially sensitive. Sunburn not only causes painful, red skin that may peel or blister, but it also increases the risk of skin conditions such as cancer.
Skin cancer in animals
Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to certain types of skin cancer in animals, just as it does in humans. The most common form in animals is squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). This type is often seen in white cats on the ear tips, in dogs with light coats, and in horses with pink noses. It often starts as a small wound that does not heal and gradually spreads. In cats, part of the ear may sometimes need to be amputated to prevent further spread.
Melanoma - commonly associated with sun exposure in humans—can also occur in animals. These tumors usually develop in hairless areas such as the nose or belly that receive a lot of sun exposure. They often appear dark in color and can vary in aggressiveness. A veterinarian can determine, through a (cytological) biopsy, whether such a tumor needs to be removed and how extensively.
Other, less common tumors that can be caused by sun exposure include hemangiosarcoma and basal cell carcinoma. These also tend to occur in areas of the body that are frequently exposed to sunlight.
How can you protect your pet?
Fortunately, you can protect your pet by using a special sunscreen. A pet-friendly sunscreen helps block UV rays, preventing both sunburn and cellular damage that can lead to cancer. Just like with humans, it is recommended to apply sunscreen every 2 hours for animals that spend a lot of time in the sun or outdoors—and again after swimming or water play.
Please note: never use human sunscreen. These products often contain ingredients (such as fragrances or chemical filters) that can cause allergies or gastrointestinal issues if licked by animals. Some ingredients that are safe for dogs can be toxic to cats. In addition, many sunscreens can be harmful to aquatic life if your dog enjoys swimming.
What else can you do?
Provide plenty of shaded areas in your garden or outdoor space.
Regularly check your pet’s skin. Any unusual spots or wounds that do not heal should always be examined by a veterinarian.
